Pasta, Grace, and Grit: The Story Behind Pasta on the Pier

Pasta, Grace, and Grit: The Story Behind Pasta on the Pier

Sometimes survival is simple. A lucky find. A quiet moment. The grace to keep going. That’s the message that quietly revealed itself as I painted Pasta on the Pier.

This whimsical scene shows a seagull enjoying a bowl of pasta salad and a glass of red wine, left behind on a wooden dock. The ocean stretches out behind him, and in the distance, a whale tail dips into the sea. It's playful and lighthearted, but for me, it carries an unexpected thread of emotion.

Years ago, I lived in a town in California called Seacliff Beach, a place where the rhythm of the waves seemed to echo in every breath. One of my favorite places was the old pier, where I could walk out above the water and take in the horizon. Not long ago, I returned to visit that town and walked that same pier again. I breathed in the salt air and felt memories stirring. Soon after, I painted this piece.

And then something uncanny happened. Within the year, a powerful storm struck Seacliff and destroyed the pier completely. It no longer stands.

When I painted Pasta on the Pier, I felt a tinge of sadness, though I couldn’t quite name it at the time. I imagined the person who left behind that elegant little lunch—a beautiful pasta salad and a bottle of red wine. Were they interrupted? Did they leave in a hurry? What happened to them? I found myself wondering, and perhaps, in a way, grieving. Not just for that uneaten meal, but for the quiet, sacred moments that sometimes slip away before we realize how precious they were.

Now I wonder if the painting was a kind of premonition. A quiet farewell to something I didn’t know I was about to lose. At the time, I was simply following a feeling, letting the brush guide me as I imagined the story behind the abandoned lunch. But looking back, it feels like my heart knew something my mind hadn’t caught up to yet.

Still, the seagull remains. He has become a symbol of resilience, of making do with what is left behind. Of continuing on, even in the wake of loss.

That is what art does. It makes space for mystery, memory, and meaning. It holds both sadness and sweetness. And it reminds us that even in the chaos of storms, life finds a way.
