Beneath rugged mountain peaks, an unexpected gathering has taken place. A bear, fox, deer, mountain goat, and mountain lion sit together at a picnic table, sharing a colorful feast in quiet harmony.

Mountain Meal was inspired by the Flatirons in Boulder, Colorado, where I once lived at the foot of the mountains. I often spent time at the picnic tables there, surrounded by the landscape and the feeling of wildlife just beyond view. In this magical realist scene, I imagined animals found throughout the region claiming one of those tables for a gathering of their own.

Although each animal brings a different nature and instinct to the meal, they meet without conflict. Their shared table becomes a symbol of kinship, cooperation, and the possibility of connection across differences.

Created from my original hand-painted acrylic painting on canvas, this museum print combines symbolic storytelling with the grounded beauty of the Colorado landscape. The expressive animals, abundant meal, and dramatic mountain backdrop invite the viewer to pause and discover the small details within the scene.
