Single Carrot was inspired by a line attributed to Paul Cézanne:

“The day is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will set off a revolution.”

I have always felt something spiritual in those words. To me, they suggest that even the most ordinary object may hold a secret about our existence if we are willing to stop and look at it with fresh eyes.

In the painting, a horse in a deep maroon robe sits across from a white rabbit, with a single carrot carefully placed between them. I did not originally imagine them as teacher and student. But as I painted the horse in his robe, he gradually became a spiritual teacher to me, quietly guiding his student toward understanding through the contemplation of something utterly ordinary.

The two creatures could hardly be more different, yet they share an understanding and, of course, a love of carrots. Their quiet encounter became a meditation on attention, connection, and the possibility that wisdom can reveal itself in unexpected places.

Single Carrot also helped me understand what I wanted my art to do. Whenever the painting is displayed, people seem to interpret the scene differently, and conversation begins almost immediately.

Created from my original hand-painted acrylic painting on canvas, this museum print invites the viewer to pause, look more closely, and discover a meaning of their own.

Perhaps the revolution begins simply by seeing what has always been there.
